The medieval chapels of the Cathedral of Santa Maria di Castello in Cagliari. Building, occlusion, restoration
Abstract
The medieval chapels built in the transept of Santa Maria di Castello in Cagliari show the transition of Sardinia from the tuscan cultural and political context to the Arago-Catalan sphere of influence. The chapels were closed during the restoration of the Cathedral, promoted by archbishop Pietro Vico between the 17th and the 18th century. The finding of medieval chapels is known through archival documents, which show that the discovery occurred in 1902, during Archbishop Palace’s renovation. Their restoration dates about 1930.
Le cappelle medievali innalzate nel transetto della cattedrale di Cagliari testimoniano il passaggio della Sardegna dall’orbita politico-culturale toscana a quella catalano-aragonese. Esse furono murate durante i restauri della cattedrale promossi dall’ arcivescovo Pietro Vico tra la fine del XVII e gli inizi del XVIII secolo. Attraverso i documenti d’archivio, si ricostruisce la vicenda relativa al rinvenimento di una delle due cappelle, avvenuto in occasione dei lavori di restauro eseguiti nell’adiacente palazzo arcivescovile nell’anno 1902. Il loro ripristino risale invece agli anni ’30 del Novecento.
