Abstract

In 2006, it was estimated that more than 50% of the world's population lived in urbanised areas and that there were more than 408 cities with more than one million inhabitants. The speed of growth of urban agglomerations has reached exponential levels in the last sixty years. This phenomenon shows how the urban condition is definitively ingrained with Contemporaneity and expresses the role assumed by contemporary metropolises in the world scenario, that of attracting economic and mercantile flows. In this context, cities assume transnational dimensions and roles beyond their geographical location.
